Milky Way & Landscape
Photography Workshop

August 3-7 (Tuesday–Saturday)

A photographer’s playground sculpted by time
Small group of five participants • Single Occupancy Room Reserved

Carved by time and crowned by the cosmos, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks offer endless inspiration for adventurous photographers. From sunrises illuminating ancient stone arches to the Milky Way rising above deep desert canyons and storied arches, we'll explore and create images that capture the unique essence of Utah's sculpted landscapes. This workshop is perfect for those who love chasing the light and the stars while avoiding the daytime heat.

This workshop includes an immersive off-road Jeep experience to access spectacular scenery in Canyonlands, which adds real adventure to this trip.

Instruction is hands-on throughout the workshop, with emphasis on composition, image development, and more. I work alongside you in the field to develop your photography skills, inspire your creative vision, and guide your post-processing workflow, giving you the confidence to continue to apply what you’ve learned long after the workshop ends.

This workshop is focuses on Milky Way photography, however we will be sure to explore the beauty of these parks at sunrise and sunset during our time together. I have scheduled a limited number of destinations in order to give you ample time to explore a variety of compositional approaches.

WHERE WE WILL TRAVEL

Arches National Park

Sculpted over millions of years, this red rock landscape is nature’s masterpiece. There are 2,000 natural stone arches in the park! There are four different categories of arches to look for: cliff wall arches, free-standing arches, pothole arches, and natural bridges. Some of the most famous arches in Arches National Park are free-standing or classic arches. Delicate Arch is the most popular, even gracing the Utah license plate.

Landscape Arch is the longest arch in the world, with a gravity-defying span of 306-feet across and the narrowest point is only six feet thick.

Although Arches only gets 8-10 inches of rainfall each year, there are 700+ plant and animal species that thrive in this harsh arid environment. Most wildlife in Arches National Park is nocturnal, however, mule deer, bighorn sheep, cottontail rabbits, ground squirrels, and numerous birds of prey can be spotted during the daylight hours.

Fun Fact: At least 11 movies were filmed in Arches. Thelma & Louise, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, and Hulk, have used this jaw dropping landscape as a backdrop for their blockbusters.

WHERE WE WILL TRAVEL

Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park, located in Utah, covers 337,598 acres of deep canyons, unique geological formations, and stunning vistas. In addition to the beauty you will witness by day, Canyonlands N.P. is also designated as a “dark sky park,” where it is possible to see thousands of stars throughout the night.

The park is home to a number of unique geological features, including the Island in the Sky, a mesa that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, and the Needles, with its stunning spires and towers.

Fun Fact: Butch Cassidy & His Wild Bunch Had A Hideout In Canyonlands

Canyonlands is connected to one of the most notorious outlaw gangs of a bygone era. In fact, “Robbers Roost” was the nickname given to the canyon and surrounding area in southern Utah where the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy and his “Wild Bunch Gang” would often meet up and hide out after one of their big heists.

Allow Me to Introduce Myself

It is my privilege to share my knowledge of photography with you—a passion instilled in me by my late father and mentor, Lowell Anson Kenyon, who served as Chief of the Office of Photography for the Smithsonian Institution.

My teaching style is upbeat, enthusiastic, and encouraging. Whether you're seeking hands-on instruction or thoughtful guidance, I strive to create a positive learning environment that nurtures your creativity while building a strong foundation in photographic technique. My goal isn't simply to help you take better photographs—it's to help you see the landscape more intentionally, recognize compelling opportunities, and develop the confidence to create images that reflect your own unique vision.

I hope to share not only my passion for creating compelling photographs, but also the joy of allowing yourself to be captivated by the beauty of the landscape—to slow down, connect with nature, and appreciate the remarkable places we have the privilege to explore.

These workshops are designed for photographers who enjoy adventure and want to maximize their time in the field. Rather than spending valuable daylight hours indoors, I reserve more formal instruction and image review for a post-workshop group Zoom session. By then, you'll be rested, have had time to review your photographs, and can select your favorite images for thoughtful discussion and feedback. The session also includes a post-processing tutorial, where I share techniques specifically suited to the subjects and conditions we photographed during the workshop.

I hope you'll join me, where creating lasting memories is every bit as important as filling your memory cards with unforgettable images.

We plan to explore breathtaking scenery

Testimonials

★★★★★
Arches N.P. Workshop – 2019

I attended Christine’s “Capture the Night” workshop in Arches National Park during the Nightscaper Conference. Christine was great to work with and made sure that everyone walked away with a photo they were happy with. She pushed me to try new techniques and get out of my comfort zone. During the workshop, I generated my first blended foreground using some tips from Christine. The result is my favorite photo from my trip to Arches, and it was nominated as a finalist in an international photo competition! I thoroughly enjoyed shooting and chatting with Christine until the early light of dawn.

★★★★★
Lakes & Dunes – 2020

I did Christine's Capture the Night -
photo workshop back in 2020 when we all needed to get out and about. It was wonderful. Not only did Christine show great knowledge of a wide variety of good place for night-time photography, but her instruction really helped improve my photographic skills. I'd highly recommend her workshops!
